Twitter Tips for the First Time Tweeter

The second worst mistake that you can make on Twitter is to say something broadly offensive long after you've already built a strong following. The worst is to be boring from the outset.

While you're just starting out, you at least want to ensure that you're not wasting time on Twitter. Here are three tips to keep in mind for your first social media campaign on Twitter.

1. Think of the Reader

The reader doesn't care about your new product launch. Your followers don't care what's going on behind the scenes at your company. Your readers want interesting content delivered to them in an interesting way. The more you know about your market, about your best customers, the easier it will be to write for them.

Don't write tweets and then think about how to reach people. Think about the people you want to reach, and then write the kind of Tweets that they want to read. You can do this rather easily by picking out a few people that you would regard as ideal customers, and then look at the Twitter accounts that they follow. Note which Tweets they favorite and retweet and you'll have a good idea of where to aim your Twitter content.

2. Treat it Like Real Content

If you hire a professional to write your blog, hire a professional to write your Tweets. Put some real time and effort into it if you write it yourself, and think your Tweets through before you post them. Twitter makes it very easy to post before you've even given your Tweet a second's thought, but this can be harmful. At worst, you're going to irritate and alienate readers with poorly thought out content. At best, you're going to bore them with a dull, repetitive flood of inane chatter.

Take your time and produce content for Twitter that is just as good as the content that you produce for your blog.

3. Be a Pillar of the Community

Some people don't follow anyone on Twitter. If you're Steve Martin, you can get away with that. If you're not a famous and beloved celebrity, then you may want to follow some people on Twitter and interact with them regularly. The more you take part in the community, the more they'll take notice of you and your content.

Remember that Twitter is just another platform for social interaction. Treat it as such and ye shall be rewarded.
