Ever wondered what it's like to be a sales and new business professional?
We asked our very own Chicago Account Manager and New Business Development hire Larry Newquist II to shed some light on his daily inspirations.
A Day in the Life of a Sales Professional
Artisan: How did you end up in sales?
Larry: This is a great question because until the last few months I felt that it was kind of by accident.I wanted to change the world. I was either wait-listed or rejected by all the schools I applied to, so I took a job doing door-to-door marketing and sales - my younger brother's boss during his summer internships told him that he credits much of his success to his early-career experience doing door-to-door.
Up until recently, I thought it was as simple as that, but I've always had the innate ability to help people get what they need. One of my longest friends recently reminded me that as a freshman in high school I used to sell deodorant, body spray, and soap in gym class to people who didn’t have any...I sold them free samples. They all knew they were free samples I had collected so there was always the haggle:
“I’m not paying you for that when you got it for free," countered with "looks like you’re going through the rest of the day smelling like a gym shoe my man… [for] $1.00 I’ll give you a bar of soap and a stick of deodorant.”
We usually settled in the $0.50 range, but I made $5-10 a day for my first semester in high school selling toiletries to upper classmen.
How did you end up in Chicago?
I was traveling back and forth between the St. Louis area and Chicago to visit friends several times a month. When two job offers came along, I chose to take the one in Chicago, so I didn’t have to travel to visit my friends.
Favorite Chicago Sports Team?
I’m going to have to go Bulls here because it’s the only Chicago team I’ve always been a fan of. Being a St. Louis Cardinals fan I’ll never make the switch in baseball, but I tip my cap to the Cubs. Thanks for not signing Fowler!
Favorite TV Salesman you love?
Michael Scott. People forget that he’s actually an incredible salesman. He’s just a terrible manager.
What are some of your favorite ways to meet people?
I drive Lyft after work and on weekends, and I absolutely love talking to people and learning more about them while I drive. People are very honest and some funny conversations usually happen.
The shared rides are the absolute best because its usually at least 3 people who have never met, and if I’m in the car, I guarantee you at least one person is talking and one person is laughing…those people are usually both me.
GO-TO Inspirational quote?
“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”- Michael Jordan
Any words of wisdom for aspiring professionals?
- Get outside your comfort zone
- Find a mentor
- Be a mentor
If you do all of these things, I promise you that you will learn more about yourself than you ever could have otherwise.
