We often talk about how to make your skills more marketable - we're big believers in accurately portraying the impact creatives like you can make. In 2025, it’s clear that the major skill everyone needs to embrace is how to prompt AI agents. More and more of our clients are relying on AI to speed up processes and looking to hire people who know a thing or two about how to write solid prompts for AI. So if you're not already leaning on these agents to make yourself more efficient, now is the time to start. But don't worry, we’ll help you understand what makes a great prompt and how you might use this skill to your advantage at your next gig.

Prompting 101: Essentials For The Best AI Prompts

  • Provide Necessary Data and Background
Begin with your “why”—what information do you already have that you want the AI agent to use in determining their findings? Whether you’re looking for an explanation of how your customers have behaved with recent emails or you’re looking for design ideas based on favorable consumer metrics, you need to provide the agent with the appropriate data first. Some platforms may already have your data aggregated, like if you’re using Google Analytics, for example, while other agents, like ChatGPT, will need your input first to understand your end goal. This may include information you find obvious like your company name, your website, and what your company does. But you should also include non-public information like your brand guidelines. Think of this step as the information you'd give a new freelancer you're asking to do the same task.
  • Define Your Parameters
Tell the AI agent exactly what you want to do with a clearly defined scope. Set boundaries and limits for the agent. Examples include setting a date range, asking for a limited number of results, or asking for results that only apply to a type of niche consumer. The better your parameters are defined, the stronger your results will be. You can also use bullets! The robots love a good scannable list, so don’t feel like you have to write out your prompt in paragraph form.
  • Be Specific, Direct, And Concise With Language
Humans have the gift of using flowery words, but meandering prompts or ones that involve idioms will confuse the AI agent. For example, you ask ChatGPT to create a list of ideas for your copywriting blog but to not “beat around the bush” when it comes to using direct language. The agent will struggle to understand you and might offer blog results involving topiary abuse.
  • Provide An Example
If you want results that are stylized or written for a specific audience, It’s best to offer a concrete example of the type of result you’re looking for. For example, if you’re writing blog articles for New Yorkers and want to include modern slang from NYC, include examples of words the agent might use in their response. You might also provide an example of where the agent might pull inspiration from, say, The Guardian’s New York comment section or from the What Is New York Instagram page (depending on the niche interests and language of your readers).
  • Follow Up With A Stronger Prompt
AI gets better as it learns more about what you’re searching for, so strengthen your prompts if you’re not getting high-quality results. Notice what you don’t like about the agent’s answers or results and follow up with prompts that set better parameters. For example, if you notice they are not pulling from reputable sources, ask that their information be pulled specifically from academic journals and cite each source. Better prompting is all about practice, practice, practice! The more you work with AI, the stronger your prompts will become.

Interesting Ways To Use AI For Improved Content

  • Building Content Strategy For Your Brand
Provide the agent with your brand’s core target audience and list any past content strategy that didn’t work along with any favorable outcomes. Ask the AI agent to suggest further ideas based on these favorable outcomes and stay away from what hasn’t worked in the past.
  • Create Tables Of Data For Design
If you’re a designer tasked with organizing complex data into visuals, you can prompt AI to do the organizing for you! You can also ask it to suggest visual representations of data but take their suggestions with a grain of salt. At the moment, human designers are way better at this sort of interpretation, but it doesn’t hurt to use AI for ideation.
  • Assess Risks Based On Proposed Strategy
If your team is struggling to choose a path for certain projects, you no longer have to run costly tests to know the risks. AI agents can tell you what risks you may run into around everything from user experience to budgeting challenges, allowing your team to make more informed decisions from the jump.
  • SEO Optimize Everything
AI agents will typically provide the most relevant SEO keywords embedded in their responses, but it’s always best to directly ask the bots for lists of top keywords they recommend. Prompt them for a list of keywords for everything from your writing, to your site design, your user experience projects, and more!

As you can see, there are so many different ways to use AI in building your skills in 2025. Every AI interaction starts with knowing how to write a great prompt, though! So have fun with it, play around, and practice. The next time you’re interviewing you’ll be able to confidently say that you’re skilled in using AI to achieve great results
